Do’s And Don’ts Of Road Tripping In New Zealand

4:15 AM Dhanur Chauhan 22 Comments

One of the top destinations for road trippers is New Zealand, where each year thousands jump in a campervan hire and head out to experience the thrills and scenery of the road in this wild, beautiful country. Not only are there hundreds of miles of scenic wilderness and wild beaches, but there are a plethora of outdoor activities to partake in. From surfing to skiing to hiking, this land truly has it all. There is no better way to experience it than on a campervan trip. Before you set out, however, you should take into account the main do’s and don’ts when it comes to road tripping in this rugged and beautiful nation.

Do’s

Plan Your Route Carefully

There are so many sights to see and activities to undertake in New Zealand that planning for your trip may be a bit overwhelming. You can easily end up planning too many activities and have trouble completing them, or you may plan routes that cover too much territory to cover in one journey. For this reason, it is incredibly important that you take into full account the distance you will be covering on your route and carefully mapping your trip so that you don’t run into these types of problems.

Pack Accordingly

Keep in mind that the New Zealand weather can change drastically depending on the region you are traveling through. No matter what season you are traveling in, sudden changes in temperature should be expected. Just because it’s the dead of summer doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pack a coat. Especially in the mountainous regions, there can be storms and drastic temperature drops and rises.

Pack accordingly and you will be much more comfortable. Also keep firmly in mind that many regions in NZ are incredibly remote. For this reason, you will want to have enough food and water in case you should become stranded, plus the proper tools to fix any minor engine problems or other issues with your campervan hire. The last thing you want is to have trouble you cannot fix when moving through one of the many remote regions in the countryside.
Take Advantage Of Resources

Don’t just jump into your trip without reading up on the region you will be traveling. This means more than just looking up where to camp and which activities to take part in along the way. You will want to get some tips on traveling in your chosen region, and the best way to do this is to consult fellow travelers.

The best way to do this is to consult one of the many campervan travel message boards, blogs, and other sites. There are many that are exclusively dedicated to New Zealand, and they have lots to offer in terms of local knowledge.

Don’ts

Don’t Just Rent Any Campervan

The comfort and success of your trip come down to a number of issues, but one of the main points is the size and features of your camper van. You need to take into account the size of your traveling party and the necessities you require for the road. Make sure to shop around until you’ve found a camper van that matches your specifications perfectly. No matter how well planned a trip may be, things can go wrong quickly without the right vehicle.

Don’t Depend On Gear Rentals

Unlike traveling in many other countries where the main sites are frequented by many tourists, there are often no tours or gear rental stations at many of the New Zealand outdoor destinies. For example, if you want to go rafting at a certain noted rafting hotspot, don’t count on being able to rent what you need. Make sure to bring any needed gear with you on the trip. This will also help you save money since rental fees are often expensive. Before you set out on your trip, make sure you are stocked with all the surfboards, skis, rafts, ropes, or any gear you may need depending on the outdoor activities you have planned for your trip.

Don’t Be Disrespectful

New Zealand is a largely undeveloped ancient land that has been enjoyed by many thousands of travelers over the decades. The country is incredibly open and helpful to road trippers, back packers, and tourists. The overall laid back vibe of Australia is one of the main attractions here, and there has been very little friction between travelers and locals over the years.

For this reason, you should always be respectful when traveling in New Zealand. Be respectful of the land. Be respectful of the locals in the areas you are passing through. And last but not least be respectful of your fellow travelers. This is a nation that fully accepts road travel as a tradition, so you should always show that respect right back.

The long tradition of road tripping is alive and well in the land many consider the best in the world when it comes to travel. So load up your campervan hire and hit the roadways soon.
