Growth hormone is produced in the pituitary gland and is responsible for the overall growth and development of an individual. There could be a deficiency of growth hormone because of the improper functioning of the pituitary gland. The improper functioning of the pituitary gland takes place because of any trauma, an accident, a disease or any genetic condition. In order to overcome this deficiency and for medical treatment, the growth hormone therapy is suggested to the children or adults, who are going through this deficiency as a result of a disease or injury to the brain or pituitary gland.

This therapy is being used by the medical communities around the world. This therapy cannot be used for non-medical use including the enhancement in the performance of an athlete or bodybuilders. This is because of the negative growth hormone effects that are much more than its benefits. The growth hormone is mainly associated with the stature or height occurring in spurts during adolescence and childhood. This hormone is responsible and takes part in several processes and activities  of the body.

The functions of the growth hormone are not limited to:
  • Promotion of the production of enzymes
  • Boost in the immune system
  • Contribution to the optimum health of organs
  • Increase the strength of bones
  • Healing or repair of tissues
  • Enhancement in the brain functions
  • Promotion of the cellular rejuvenation
Also, the growth hormone plays a crucial role in metabolism of fats and sugars in the body of an individual. This hormone also affects the way the cells and   tissues grow in the body. The range of deficiency is from short stature to dwarfism. The growth hormone therapy is in the form of injections. It is important to weight its side effects over its benefits. The growth hormone must be given to the children until they finish growing.  Also, a child with middle age, if its pituitary gland has undergone with a disease has to go through this injection throughout his life.

It is recommended that one must conduct a research before getting started with the growth hormone therapy. If an individual is going through the growth hormone deficiency, then it does not mean that he is a perfect choice for the growth hormone therapy. The effects and results of this therapy vary depending upon the situation. The individuals taking growth hormones, however he has an adequate level of growth hormone in the body, then there increases a risk of the occurrence of side effects.

The negative growth hormone effects are mild and temporary in nature, as compared to other steroids, whose effects are long lasting and more serious. The athletes using this drug illegally take it in higher dosage than recommended. Sometimes, the high level of growth hormone leads to Acromegaly, which cannot be cured.

If this Acromegaly left untreated, it may also lead to a permanent damage to the pituitary gland. Some of the individuals experience development of lung issues, whereas a few individuals go through joint problems.
